30-plus years

Our Humble Beginnings

IRVSRA has its roots way back in the 1980s, before SRAs were possible.  In fact, one of the oldest and longest-running programs at Pekin Park is Sunshine Camp, a summer day camp tailored to young children with special needs and intellectual disabilities.

An Agency is Born

Two girls are sitting on a court—one has a blue shirt and pink hair accessories, while the other wears glasses and a gray shirt.

Pekin and Fon du Lac Park Districts form an official Special Recreation Association (SRA), pooling resources to provide recreational programs and leisure services to residents and non-residents with developmental disabilities. A board of directors is formed, and the name is chosen: Illinois River Valley Special Recreation Association.

IRVSRA continues to provide integrated and specialized programs to all residents of Tazewell County. Peer groups are invaluable. IRVSRA provides opportunities to individuals with disabilities to surround themselves with friends and neighbors that share commonalities. It is our pleasure to provide these athletic and social settings for the special needs population in the Tazewell County area. This website is here to help you get connected and stay up to date with news, programs, activities, and cancellations. There are multiple ways to get involved with IRVSRA. We hope you take the time to go over everything on the website and the current program brochure.
